Elko, midway between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Reno, Nev., was founded in 1869, and is still in the heart of Nevada's "Cowboy Country." Local attractions include Northeastern Nevada Museum, Western Folk life Center, Elko Railroad Park, Sherman Station and Gold Mine Tours.
